Newsletter Excerpt Use Your Powers for Good? Seems pretty simple doesn't it? But how often do you let your powers get in the way of your own goals? One day a client told me that as she was preparing for our meeting, she found herself getting angry with me about her goals. After a bit of reflection on how she thought I'd respond, she realized that they were HER goals and that I had little to do with it. She knew I'd ask her if she wanted to keep the goals and if they were still in the service of the larger life picture that she had created for herself. This moment of insight allowed her to see her own rebellion and how it was getting in the way of reaching her goals. Rebellion often comes up as we try and make changes in our lives. If you find you need to rebel, find a way to rebel that is consistent with your goals and not contrary to them. For instance, I once had a client who was quitting smoking who realized that what triggered him to smoke was someone asking him how quitting was going. At that point, his rebellion would kick in and he would say to himself "I can smoke anytime I want to" and he'd go out and light up. What he did the next time he tried was to wear a button that said "I am quitting smoking. If you ask me about it I will choke you." Now, I don't suggest this route for everyone, but this client had a well-known sense of humor that others enjoyed. Rebelling in this way enabled him to get a laugh out of his friends and let them know how he needed to be supported. What he found was that people would read the button, laugh, and then ask him about something else. Guess what? He quit smoking and his rebellion was right there helping him along the way. Are you using your powers for good? If not and you find you are rebelling, ask yourself the following questions: 1. What am I getting out of the rebellion? 2. What can I do that will accomplish the same thing and be consistent with my goals? If you have a story about using rebellion in a way that helps you accomplish your goals, please send me a note at sarah@TrueFocusCoaching.com. I'd love to hear it! |
