It’s a scary time of year, and not just for people who are afraid of spiders and ghosts and sugar-dosed kids. Time seems to speed up after Halloween, doesn’t it?

For one thing, you might already be thinking about Thanksgiving planning, or you’ll need to start right after Halloween. If you’re hosting the feast, make sure you make time for recipe planning and deep cleaning along with asking others to help you get things done. If you travel for the holiday, start planning now to get ready for the time you’ll lose while on the road. It’s no wonder that so many people start looking for time management hacks this time of year.

Some of us lose an entire week of work productivity around Thanksgiving. And that’s not a bad thing! Spending all that time with loved ones, eating delicious food and catching up on rest is time well spent as far as I’m concerned. But your workload doesn’t necessarily take the same break. To avoid feeling super stressed when you want to be relaxing after eating your turkey, think through your work and personal deadlines from now until year-end. That way you can make sure that you see the log jams far enough ahead of time to make adjustments.

Have you already started making mental lists of all the projects you have to get done before Thanksgiving, even though it’s still more than a month away? If you’re already on top of your game and feeling totally organized and in control of your workload and personal time, go ahead and start that November planning! But I know that a lot of you are struggling to get done all the stuff that’s currently on your plate, so looking ahead to stuff coming down the road might feel downright overwhelming.

So, about those time management hacks. If the suggestions above seem too far-fetched to you, the first thing I want you to do is stop and take a deep breath. You CAN get the most important things done! If you haven’t already, create a to-do list, on paper or electronic format. Get clear about each step and then figure out what to do first and when you will do it.  It’s what I call putting together a Time Map and it will allow you to get the most important things done and let go of the less important things without guilt.

If you’re already looking ahead to Thanksgiving, the December holidays and the new year and feeling stressed about finishing the year strong, think about this: time is still on your side! You have more than two months left of this year, and I want you to know that you can finish 2018 strong. The key is to take action NOW, and I can help you do it.
